From the article’s title, that’s a question that we all should try and give an answer to, most especially from our young people. This is usually a topic that must be deliberated and discussed by today’s young people. From the present research and observation, it is noticed that most of the young people across the globe are too obsessed with material things and can’t clearly state the difference between being materialistic and being successful without moving both.
It is quite true without any doubt that it’s everybody’s expectation to be successful and make it big in their various aspects of life but in defining success, people give success different meanings depending on their own understanding and perspectives. However, it would be very wrong to define success by the level of material things that one possesses.
In a world where most aspiring and energetic young people long and desire to belong to a class of high standard society where it is full of glamours and flamboyant lifestyle, most young people tend to get lost in their pursuit of genius success of impacting other lives around. On the other hand, some of them end up chasing after things that don’t really matter all in the bid to become famous, classy and known. To worsen the situation, the society that should help curtail the situation now tends to be the very ones hyping, paying attention to and praising these sets of high materialistic fellows who have dangerously influenced the young people to see it as a norm and imitate these fellows.
And in the bid to keep up to this high standard of living, instead of these young people to genuinely and patiently grow, nurture and build their true success stories one step after the other, some of them would prefer to soil their hands into all sort of things (most especially the bad ones) just to make money that they can spend and lavish on acquiring any type of material things for themselves.
In conclusion, I’m not against anyone living a good life and looking good but being highly materialistic and wanting to buy everything that passes you by is one thing that I’m strongly against because even healthwise it has been proven that high materialism shortens the life span of people. So in an answer to the question at hand, materialism should never be a true measurement of success in the 21st century because materialism does not in any way at all equate to success.
It is also advisable that every young person should learn how to be real and be true to themselves including being contented with what they can comfortably afford at the moment while working towards achieving their goals and dream. Also, being less materialistic as a young person will help you to live a highly productive life, spend and save money wisely for future use and be able to create new opportunities and innovations that will be beneficial and impactful.
