When I was little, I loved to play. My neighbour had these little wild wiener dogs that were always chained. But one day, to my chagrin, I heard RUFFRUFFRUFFRUFFRUFF. It didn’t sound like it was coming from afar off. I looked and saw a fat brown wiener dog making a dash at me nipping at my heels. Instead of facing the little turd, I got scared and took off sprinting back into my house. The dang thing came out of nowhere & completely startled me. Then the random sprint sent me into a wheezing fit as I tried to slow my breathing. Eventually, I found my pace again but it took a while before I’d go out comfortably without searching every nook and cranny to make sure there was no dog lurking nearby. Even today, I’m still scared of dogs but it got me thinking; just when we are getting…

HUNGER IN HEAVEN They sat in ethnic lines with hearts filled with great confusion. In their decisions, though it differs the various choices of the majority pulled down the rain amidst cloud. Silence had settled the cloud and rain fell in their heart. Their homes were left in a tyranny of hunger and starvation. Some of their puppies suddenly became thieves and the honest ones were desperate for survival that honesty became so strange to them for it was no longer marketable in the habitats in which they reside. They sat in their habitats without strength to dance as it were of yesterday after the illusion. Cow, a man very keen in the honesty of his brother remembered what happened in their country called Crook. He could not withstand the hunger that complicated his thought. So he called his brother, “Goat,” as he stood up from where he sat. “I…

I love you, Alyson, You’re the best thing that has happened to me and I don’t want to let go of that. Your smile is drug enough to fuel my addiction to you… not you, my addiction to us. Hi Mrs. Grey, it’s your future hubby, Mr. Grey talking or in this case, writing. I hope you’re well. Piz, you stepped into my life and everything changed and I’ve come to know, it is a meant-to-be relationship. I’ve had my past love experiences but this doesn’t feel like any of them, it feels different on a whole new level, way deeper, and more intense, like you drilled a hole into my very core and planted yourself there and no, I don’t want you out. I want you to spread your branches in me and plant your roots firmly. I want you to be my all and my nothing. I need…

I just want someone to hug, and I’m wondering if it’s too much to ask for. I’m not sure I can ever remember a time in my life when I woke up sad every morning and turned in even sadder, every night. This is the first time I’ve chosen to be honest with myself or anyone. To tell the truth and to not run away, only to come back more scared. And so, I opened up my heart and let him in. I can’t remember doing such a thing until he came. I’ve always enjoyed the bliss that comes with solitude but now, I don’t think I want to enjoy that bliss any longer. I just want someone to hug, and I’m wondering if it’s too much to ask for. My parents believe in God. I used to, maybe I still do. I’m not sure, so I’ve prayed to whosoever…

So, I heard that the Nigerian economy is in a recession because of the fall in crude oil prices. This oil that is at the root of the problem in the Niger Delta, This same oil that is responsible for the under-development of other sectors of the economy, The same oil whose discovery birthed the massive corruption we have in this country. That’s all rubbish! Such fallacy! Isn’t oil an inanimate object? Is this oil not supposed to be controlled by people? Don’t we have structures put in place to effectively manage it? Definitely, our problem doesn’t lie with the oil in Nigeria But with the people of Nigeria! Growing up, I’ve heard tales of how great Nigeria used to be… Of how, other nations depended on our exports, But those are just tales to me, and many of my generation will agree Because the Nigeria we’ve grown up in…

What is silence? Silence is a life devoid of love or a world filled with love? Silence is a life filled with calls or a world devoid of calls? Silence is it the prophetic failure on me or echoes of destined success? Silence is the regretted past or rejected future? Silence is it a world without my stories or a world filled with it? Is that silence? Have you ever heard and tasted silence? Have you ever been hurt by silence? What is silence? Silence is a thousand words I say without sounds Silence is the love I convey with my eyes amidst hate It is the walk I take in depths of words that eyes cannot read It is the sweet quietness that embodies my bitterness Is that silence? Silence is a lover, a jealous one Silence is that spirit I nursed in my heart It is the words…

When at home watch your temper, When in company watch your tongue, When alone watch your movement. Life is like an egg, When broken It cannot be mended. Life is like a puff of smoke, Which appears for a moment, and disappears. Man is born to do his own thing But not everything is good for him. Because men’s evil deeds are written On brass, the good ones on water. Man looks at the outward appearance, God looks at the heart. Written by Edem, Ekang A.

Be courteous to all, but intimate with a few and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow growth and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation. We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world and the best we can find in our travels is an honest friend. My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me. No person is your friend who demands your silence or denies your rights to grow. True friendship consists not in the multitude of friends but of their worth and value. When a friend is in trouble, do not annoy him by asking if there is anything you can do. Think of something appropriate and do it. False friends are like our shadows, keeping close to us while we…

I see them hanging on a rope — all so beautiful. “Five-Five hundred Naira!” The seller announces from behind his wares of beautiful boubous and dresses. I’m thinking of momma, all she’s done for me. “Five-Five hundred Naira only!” He announces again. The black boubou with a butterfly motif catches my eyes. It’s pretty. I glance at my purse and I wish I could afford it. It doesn’t matter the cost. I know she would be overjoyed if I got it for her. But I can’t afford it, I simply can’t. So, I walk away. – Mirabelle Morah

I wrote this story exactly when I was 16 and put it on my first blogspot account, as inspired by Chimamanda Adichie’s book, Half Of A Yellow Sun. I opened my eyes and there I was, standing in the middle of chaos. Disorder everywhere. People running Helterskelter, babies crying, women screaming. I wish I could say that I didn’t know what was happening but someone had already secretly whispered into my ears what was going on. Amidst all the running, I met an old man under an almond tree. He let me pick up some almonds. I was afraid to pick them all, I wanted to leave some behind for the hungry people running for their lives as well . Boom! I heard it. A few meters away from me, a house was on fire. Another Boom! And the nearby birds joined in the flight for safety. In all the…
